Potenza Picena: a mosaic of art and culture among ancient walls and treasured heritage

The historic center of Potenza Picena offers a journey rich in art and culture, with palaces, museums and monuments that testify to the history of the village. The civic heart of the town is the Town Hall, which houses the Council Chamber decorated with nineteenth-century frescoes by Filippo Persiani and paintings by important artists such as Simone De Magistris, Corrado Giaquinto and Benedetto Biancolini. One wing of the Palace houses the "Bruno Mugellini" Municipal Theatre, inaugurated in 1862, designed by architect Giuseppe Brandoni and decorated by Filippo Persiani, still today a reference point for the cultural life of the city.

Many churches in the village are true containers of art. Places such as the Collegiate Church of Santo Stefano or the Church of San Francesco allow you to trace the local artistic evolution. Then there are deconsecrated places of worship such as the former Church of Sant'Agostino, now the Ferdinando Scarfiotti Auditorium, which houses works of art including the Panel by Bernardino di Mariotto from 1506 "Madonna with Child among Saints Anthony, Francis and Musical Angels", the altarpiece of the high altar "Mary Magdalene at the foot of the cross" by Pietro Tedeschi and a fine organ by Giovanni Fedeli from 1757. Or, again, the former Church of Santa Caterina which is now home to the Municipal Photo Library: inside you can find sacred art works, such as the triptych "Madonna with Child between Saints James the Greater and Roch" by Paolo Bontulli da Percanestro from 1507.

Strolling through the center, architectural details also deserve attention, such as the Portal of Palazzo Properzi, the oldest in the city (15th century), a rare example of Gothic terracotta with double ogival arches.

Finally, a unique monument of its kind is the Pyramid of May inaugurated on July 16, 1967. It is the only copy in Europe of the pyramid found in Buenos Aires and symbolizes the strong historical bond between Potenza Picena and the community of emigrants from Potenza Picena in Argentina, adding an element of international history to the village.

Potenza Picena offers a dense and varied cultural itinerary. From public buildings to churches, through original museums and symbolic monuments, the town allows you to explore many aspects of Marche history and art.
