The Tower of the Port

Symbol and historical memory of Porto Potenza Picena

Art and culture

The Tower of the Port is the undisputed icon of Porto Potenza Picena, the last majestic bulwark of a coastal fortress whose presence has been attested since the fifteenth century. Born with the crucial function of lookout and defense against the continuous raids of pirates and corsairs that threatened the Adriatic coast, its massive structure served as a military garrison to protect the local community. After the Unification of Italy, much of the fortified complex was demolished, but the keep was chosen to be preserved, which was then remodeled in its upper part in 1884.

In the twentieth century, the tower underwent a surprising transformation. In 1947, it became the headquarters of the scientific research of Professor Silvio Zavatti, explorer and founder of the Polar Geographic Institute. The ancient sentinel of the sea thus transformed into a study center in preparation for an expedition to Greenland, unexpectedly linking its history to that of Arctic explorations.

Today, the Tower of the Port houses within it an evocative exhibition-museum that recounts its rich history. Visitors can admire ancient maps of coastal fortifications, ship models, period weapons and documents that narrate the origins of Porto Potenza. Open to the public during the summer and on special occasions, such as the patron saint's feast of Sant'Anna, the tower offers a fascinating journey through time and remains the most beloved symbol of the town.
