The grand palaces

Art and culture

The current Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) was rebuilt starting from 1745 by the hand of Pietro Bernasconi from Ticino, the main collaborator of Luigi Vanvitelli, while subsequent transformations were carried out in the 19th century; it displays three important canvases inside, in the Sala della Giunta (Council Hall).

The Palazzo del Podestà, on the other hand, whose origins date back to the fourteenth century, was renovated in the 18th century – with the addition of the Ghibelline merlons that characterize it – and then in the early nineteenth century. Both buildings overlook Piazza Matteotti, adding charm to this decidedly evocative place, while Palazzo Mazzoni (formerly Palazzo Trionfi) stands in Vico Solanelli, with a stone portal dating back to 1469 and the family crest displayed on the architrave.

Speaking of portals, those that characterize Palazzo Properzi in Via Marefoschi, dated 1402, are of great beauty.

Not to be missed, then, are the other numerous historic buildings in the city, among which we recall the Magner, il Mazzagalli, il Carradori, il Marefoschi, and il Bonaccorsi.
