The Loom Room

Within the Convent of the Collegiate Church of Santo Stefano in Potenza Picena (once called Monte Santo) lies a legacy of inestimable value: the large Jacquard looms of the "Little Nuns." This artisanal tradition began in the nineteenth century thanks to the sisters of the congregation "The Daughters of Our Lady of Sorrows," who dedicated themselves with mastery to the production of fine fabrics. Using these complex machines, the religious sisters created brocades and silks of the highest quality, giving life to an art that has marked the monastery's history.

The Jacquard looms, a revolutionary technological innovation for the time, allowed the nuns to create fabrics with complex and detailed designs, difficult to achieve by hand. Their skill did not go unnoticed: the industriousness and perfection of the "Little Nuns of Monte Santo's" products became well known, attracting the attention of experts and enthusiasts. Their production represents a rare example of monastic craftsmanship of the highest level, combining faith, discipline, and extraordinary technical competence.

Although the nuns' textile activity did not generate a continuation in the local productive fabric, the Jacquard looms are today a historical and cultural testimony of great fascination. This hidden treasure has aroused the admiration of important figures in the sector, such as entrepreneur Pierluigi Loro Piana, and continues to represent a major tourist attraction. The preservation of these ancient machines allows the memory of a precious art and the dedication of the women who preserved it for generations not to be lost.
