The Sanctuary of San Girio in Potenza Picena

The origins of this Sanctuary are inextricably linked to a miraculous event. Immediately after the death of the young pilgrim to whom it is dedicated, his remains became the object of a dispute between the communities of Potenza Picena (then Monte Santo) and Recanati. To resolve the dispute, the body was placed on a cart drawn by oxen without a guide. The exact point where the animals stopped was interpreted as a divine designation and was chosen to build the Church in 1298, which thus became the guardian of the precious relics.

Built in the heart of the Potenza Picena countryside, the Sanctuary immediately became the focal point of local devotion. For centuries it has welcomed the faithful who came on pilgrimage to venerate the remains of the Saint. The importance of the place was officially recognized in 1742, when Pope Benedict XIV approved the cult, consolidating the role of the Sanctuary as the main center of spirituality linked to the city's patron saint and destination of a constant flow of devotees coming from throughout the territory.

Even today, the Sanctuary of San Girio is a fundamental point of reference for the community of Potenza Picena and a place full of charm. It is the main setting for the solemn celebrations that take place every May 25th in honor of the patron saint, an event that unites faith, tradition and folklore. Immersed in the quiet of the Marche hills, the building is not only a historical and religious monument, but a tangible symbol of the city's identity and the continuity of centuries-old devotion.
