Porta Galiziano

The last guardian of the medieval village

Art and culture

Porta Galiziano represents the most important testimony of the medieval walls of Potenza Picena, the only one of the four ancient entrance gates to the village to have survived through time. Built between the end of the fourteenth century and the beginning of the fifteenth century during an expansion of the defenses of what was then called Monte Santo, it probably owes its name to a nearby ditch or stream, "Galazzano," which fed a spring used as a public wash house.

Born with a clear defensive function, the structure housed within it an armed guard corps, ready to protect the city from potential external threats. The current appearance of the gate is the result of numerous interventions over the centuries; among the most important, a 1775 renovation that modified its external facade according to neoclassical taste, adding elegant decorative pinnacles to its top that softened its severe military structure.

During the twentieth century, Porta Galiziano risked being demolished for road requirements, as happened to the other three city gates, but it was saved thanks to a solution that isolated it from the rest of the walls. This intervention preserved its existence, transforming it into a true monument and identity symbol. In 1961 it was further embellished with a terracotta Madonna with Child, the work of Professor Giuseppe Asciutti, which still watches over anyone who crosses this threshold laden with history.
