Montecanepino

History and traditions of an ancient village

Sea and landscapes

Montecanepino, a charming village nestled on a hill along the road that leads from Potenza Picena to the sea, stands where the Castle of San Giovanni once rose. Its privileged position, immersed in the quiet of the Marche countryside, yet a short distance from the coast, has always made it an appreciated place. The origin of the name is probably linked to the ancient and widespread activity of hemp processing; the term "canepini" in fact indicated ropemakers, suggesting an artisanal vocation that has characterized the village since the Middle Ages.

Although today it presents itself as a quiet hamlet, Montecanepino has had a significant role in local history. The presence of the Castle of San Giovanni, of which few traces remain today, testifies to its strategic importance in the past. The village has experienced the historical events of the Potenza area, maintaining over time its identity as a small industrious community, closely connected to the land and its traditions.

The most authentic soul of Montecanepino manifests itself during the feast of San Vincenzo Ferreri, one of the oldest and most heartfelt celebrations in the Municipality, which takes place every year on Easter Monday. On this occasion, the village comes alive with traditional rural games that evoke a peasant past, transforming the streets and squares into an open-air stage. This festival is not only a moment of devotion, but also an important opportunity for the entire community to rediscover its cultural roots.
