The Collegiate Church of Saint Stephen

The Collegiate Church of Santo Stefano has a fascinating history that begins at the end of the sixteenth century. Originally, the church was dedicated to Saint Ignatius of Loyola and was part of a Jesuit complex designed by architect Father Giovanni de Rosis. After the suppression of the Society of Jesus in 1773, the structure was abandoned for almost a quarter of a century, until, in 1796, following the demolition of the ancient Parish Church of Santo Stefano, the title of Collegiate Church and the Chapter were transferred there, along with many of its precious works of art.

Although the church's facade remained unfinished, the interior reveals itself to be a treasure chest of artistic riches. Among the most significant works stands out the canvas depicting the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, attributed to the school of Pomarancio, a celebrated late-Mannerist painter. Further enriching the environment is a magnificent 1848 organ, the work of the renowned Venetian organ builders Bazzani, which testifies to the richness and importance that the church has held over the centuries.

Within the complex is also the evocative Chapel of the Peasants, an intimate space of great historical and artistic value. The chapel's walls are entirely decorated with frescoes created by Benedetto Biancolini, which depict scenes of rural life and devotion. Today, thanks to its exceptional acoustics, this space is not only a place of faith, but also a perfect setting for concerts, performances, and cultural events that enliven the city's life.
