The Church of Santa Maria della Neve

The Church of Santa Maria della Neve, located just outside the historic walls of Potenza Picena (formerly Monte Santo), is a valuable testimony to fifteenth-century sacred architecture. Its construction, dating back to the 1420s, was born as a thanksgiving to the Virgin for protection from wars and epidemics, and its position made it a devotional reference point.

The artistic and spiritual heart of the building is the precious fresco depicting the "Madonna della Neve" (Madonna of the Snow), a work attributed to the painter Pietro da Recanati, active in the Marche at the beginning of the century. This mural painting, of remarkable executive refinement, represents the main object of veneration by the faithful and an important example of art from that era in the region.

In all probability, the current forms of the building date back to the seventeenth century; evidence of this is a terracotta inscription still visible today. From the following century, however, is the small loggia added to the church entrance that had the function of hosting pilgrims who stopped at Montesanto during their pilgrimage to the Holy House of Loreto.

Given its history and value, it is recommended to verify visiting possibilities through the tourist information channels of the Municipality of Potenza Picena or local cultural associations, in order to fully appreciate this significant element of the Marche heritage.
