The Church of Sant'Anna in Porto Potenza Picena

A Spiritual Point of Reference

Spirituality

The Church of Sant’Anna, located next to the Port Tower in Porto Potenza Picena, is an important historic site and a fundamental spiritual landmark for the entire community. The current building is a 1926 Neo-Gothic reconstruction designed by architect Eusebio Petetti, which replaced a previous structure that had been demolished. Its construction was a collective endeavor, strongly promoted by the parish priest of the time and financially supported by the Municipality, benefactors such as Count Giancarlo Conestabile della Staffa and Pope Pius XI, as well as the commitment of the entire citizenry. Even today, the parish that bears the Saint’s name remains an irreplaceable point of reference for all the inhabitants of Porto Potenza Picena, acting as the beating heart of local social and religious life.

Inside, the church houses a work of considerable value: a 17th-century canvas entitled “The Virgin and Child between Saints Joachim and Anne.” This painting is attributed to the renowned artist Giandomenico Cerrini, also known as the Cavalier Perugino, and is the most significant artistic element preserved in the building, bearing witness to the richness of the local cultural heritage. The church’s history is, moreover, closely tied to that of the people of Porto Potenza; initially, there were plans to build it in a more central location, but for economic reasons it was decided to reconstruct it on the original site. The official inauguration, which took place on October 23, 1926 in the presence of the Bishop of Fermo, marked a pivotal moment that definitively consolidated the church’s role in the town.

The profound bond between the place of worship and its faithful is expressed with particular intensity each year during the celebrations of Saint Anne on July 26. In the week leading up to this date, the parish, with support from the Municipality, organizes the Feast of Saint Anne, an event deeply cherished by the local community and capable of attracting numerous visitors from outside. The festivities are a major draw for many tourists thanks to a rich program that includes both religious initiatives and artistic events. This annual occasion not only celebrates devotion to the Saint, but also reaffirms the identity of the seaside village, making the Church of Sant’Anna a living symbol present in the daily life and traditions of Porto Potenza Picena.
