The Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie in Potenza Picena

A History of Faith and Miracles

Spirituality

The Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie has its roots in an ancient and profound popular devotion, born around a fifteenth-century votive shrine that housed an image of the Madonna with Child considered miraculous. Veneration for this place was so deeply rooted that already in the municipal Statute of 1455 the adjacent street was called "Via Gratiarum," meaning "Street of Graces." At the beginning of the sixteenth century, the generosity of a noblewoman made it possible to expand the shrine, transforming it into a small chapel to allow the celebration of masses.

Toward the mid-eighteenth century, the church was in a state of serious decay, so much so that in 1788 the Archbishop of Fermo ordered its demolition for the safety of the faithful. This decision triggered a strong feeling of grief and protest among the people of Potenza. Chronicles of the time tell of miraculous events, including the spontaneous ringing of a bell, which gathered the population in prayer to save the beloved temple. The extraordinary popular mobilization and these events prompted the clergy to revoke the order, entrusting the restoration of the church to the patronage of Count Leandro Mazzagalli.

Over the centuries, the building has undergone various transformations: it was expanded in 1872 to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims and almost entirely rebuilt in 1970 following a roof collapse. One of the most touching testimonies of the faith linked to this sanctuary is the rich collection of ex-votos, donated by the faithful as thanksgiving for graces received. Although only a part remains on site today, these painted tablets and precious objects tell centuries of history, miracles, and Marian devotion of the community.
