The Living Nativity
One of the most heartfelt and long-standing events of the Christmas season in the Marche region.
The Living Nativity (Il Presepe Vivente) stands out for its evocative setting and a unique approach that blends the tradition of the Nativity with a deep, rotating annual theme.
The performance takes place during the Christmas holidays in the atmospheric Selva dei Frati Minori, a woodland area adjacent to the Convent of Sant'Antonio. It involves a large cast of over 200–250 participants in period costumes—local citizens and volunteers who dedicate themselves to ensuring every historical detail is perfect.
A distinctive feature of this event is its yearly thematic focus. Rather than simply recreating the Nativity scene, the Living Nativity develops a new narrative journey each year centered on a specific religious or social theme, making every edition a completely fresh experience.
As you walk through the woods, you will find faithful reconstructions of ancient settings and scenes, including traditional crafts and depictions of life in Bethlehem, creating a powerful and immersive spiritual journey.
